In 1947, India won its freedom, but it still depended on foreign countries for almost everything, including the humble wristwatch. Watches were imported luxury items that most Indians could never afford. That changed in 1961, when the Government of India decided it was time quite literally, to make timekeeping a homegrown story.
What followed was the creation of one of the most beloved brand in Indian history: HMT Watches.
This is the story of how Hindustan Machine Tools built India’s first watch manufacturing empire and why that story still matters today.
It's the early 1950s in a young, hopeful India. Factories are rising from the ground, dreams of self-reliance are everywhere, and one man, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, is dreaming big about what Indians can build with their own hands.
The Foundation: From Heavy Machines to Tiny Wonders (1953)
In 1953, right in the heart of Bangalore, the government launched Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT). No watches yet , just massive machine tools, the giant "mothers" of industry that would help build factories, railways, and the backbone of a new nation. Nehru believed India could master precision engineering, and HMT quickly earned trust as a rock-solid public sector star.
But then came a spark that changed everything.
The Spark: A Simple Question That Started a Revolution of HMT watches history

One day Nehru received a beautiful Swiss watch as a gift. He looked at it, admired the craftsmanship, and asked aloud, “Why can’t we make something like this right here in India?”
That question refused to fade. The government first knocked on Seiko’s door in Japan for a partnership, but talks didn’t work out. Luckily, their rival , Citizen Watch Company , said yes.
In 1961, HMT signed the deal with Citizen. They built India’s very first wristwatch factory in Bangalore. On a proud day, Prime Minister Nehru himself inaugurated it and released the first batch of hand-wound mechanical watches to the people of India. It wasn’t just a factory opening, it felt like the nation had learned to tell its own time.
The Watches: One for Every Indian Heart
HMT didn’t just sell watches , they captured dreams.
The HMT Janata — “The People’s Watch.” Tough, simple, affordable. It was the gift for your graduation, your first job, your wedding. Every middle-class home had one ticking away.
The HMT Pilot — Rugged, military-inspired, loved by pilots, professionals, and anyone who felt the call of adventure.
The HMT Kohinoor — Shiny, elegant, perfect for special days when you wanted to feel dressed up.
The HMT Sona — Golden and aspirational, a little step toward luxury.
Even the thoughtful HMT Braille — a tactile watch for the visually impaired, showing India cared about everyone.
HMT kept innovating too: India’s first quartz watch, first automatic day-date, first ana-digi hybrid. They weren’t followers , they led.
The Legacy: More Than 100 Million Stories
At its peak, HMT sold over 100 million watches. That’s not just numbers, that’s generations.
Fathers passed them to sons. A young man bought his first HMT with his first salary and wore it proudly. They marked birthdays, promotions, retirements. These weren’t cold gadgets , they were emotional keepsakes of Indian life, symbols of hard work and quiet pride.
Why the Story Still Ticks in 2025
But here’s the beautiful part: HMT never really vanished.
Today, vintage HMTs are treasures. Collectors hunt rare gems, the Devanagari-dial Janata, early Citizen-movement Pilots. Online groups buzz with restoration tips, trades, and memories. These watches aren’t just old, they’re pieces of India’s industrial soul.
And in 2025, with Make in India roaring back, HMT’s tale feels fresh and inspiring. They did self-reliance before it was a slogan , out of pure necessity, with skill, sweat, and national pride.
HMT wasn’t about telling time. It was about India believing it could build world-class things, and then actually doing it. Somewhere, an old Janata still ticks faithfully, whispering: Time moves on, but real pride endures forever.
Just like HMT turned necessity into national pride, let’s turn your vision into an unforgettable story that generations remember.
